My Writing

I’m at my best when I’m finding—or helping to find—the best way to deliver a message. 

Language is meant to convey ideas. And knowing that the audience must have a reason to keep reading, I think it’s imperative that those ideas be conveyed in a compelling, fun, and entertaining manner (as appropriate for the context). I focus on the audience’s needs and how the language choice can support that, which means I’m primarily driven by two ideas:

• Start with “Know/Feel/Do.” While brainstorming or planning, I consider what the audience already knows about the message or organization, how we want the message to make them feel, and what action we want them to take because of that message. 
• Ask “What are you trying to do?” I always refer back to the main point when writing and editing, whether it’s a thesis statement of an essay or the purpose of an employee handbook. If a phrase or a word doesn’t serve that point, it will be revised or reconsidered. 

I have professional experience in the marketing, nonprofit, academic, legal, and entertainment sectors. Past projects have exposed me to marketing plans, social media content, essay writing, resume and cover letter writing, solicitations, and more, and my personal writing projects encompass fiction writing, poetry, and the occasional essay.

My Story

A California native, I earned a B.A. in English with a creative writing certificate from Northern Arizona University in 2014, where I was in marching band, a few academic organizations, and a music sorority. I moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia in 2014 to attend James Madison University for my M.A. in writing, rhetoric & technical communication, graduated in 2016, and have lived and worked in Virginia ever since.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, fiction and poetry writing, indoor bouldering, watercolor painting, and playing video games, and I’m a longtime animal/zoology enthusiast. Outside of work and hobbies, you can find me enjoying a good movie with my fiancé and our greyhound, Wednesday.
